Loyalty
Thereâs an emotional component to our anxiety as well. Weâre attached to the characters, and ending a series can almost feel disloyal, as if weâre abandoning the characters.
This is another mindset issue. Only a creative would worry about the feelings of a character! Sometimes I have to give myself a stern talking-to and remind myself that Iâm writing about fictional characters, and Iâm not being disloyal if I end a series. (Yes, Iâm weird!)

Reader Reaction
Then thereâs the readers to consider. If weâve done our job well, readers are attached to the story world. They donât want to see the series end. Theyâll lobby for more books and, as someone who doesnât like to disappoint anyone, I find it hard to squash the people-pleaser in me and say ânoâ to readers. The reality is that if readers love a series, theyâre never going to be happy if you end it. Theyâll always want more books, but thatâs a good thing. This is another mindset shift.
Instead of focusing on the negative (theyâre so disappointed) realize youâve done your job well and created passionate readers. You can use the opportunity to connect with your readers and move them on to another series, which weâll look at in the next chapter on spinoffs and literary universes.
